The Sydney Opera House is an iconic landmark and institution.
“Sydney Opera House stands by itself as one of the indisputable masterpieces of human creativity, not only in the 20th century but in the history of humankind” (International Council Report on Monuments and Sites to the World Heritage Committee).
The Opera House has been awarded a 5 star Green Star performance rating from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), becoming one of the first World Heritage-listed buildings globally to achieve the certification.
As part of its sustainability strategy and a key objective of its Environmental Action Plan, the SOH embarked on a Type 2 Energy Audit across the entire site to identify even further opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce both its energy costs and carbon footprint.
Ecosave was honoured to be selected for this project taking into consideration of three (3) aspects:
- Heritage
- Innovation
- Engineering
A number of opportunities were identified and recommended during the audit. Ecosave identified energy conservation measures with estimated ongoing energy savings of 2.2 MWh pa of electricity – approximately 15% savings of the facility’s electricity consumption – and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction of more than 2,000 tCO₂-e pa.
The findings from Ecosave’s Type 2 Energy Audit has helped SOH identify innovative energy conservation measures in lighting, mechanical, refrigeration and heating & cooling facilities that would help them progress towards its target of achieving a 6 Star Green Star Performance Rating by GBCA.
